Police Community Support Officers

Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are key members of Safer Neighbourhood Policing teams and compliment the work of Hampshire Constabulary Police Officers.

The PCSO’s primary role is to:

  • provide a visible, reassuring police presence on the streets
  • tackle minor crime and disorder issues such as ASB and graffiti
  • engage and build links with their local communities
  • deal with issues which do not require police officer attendance, freeing up police officers to attend emergency calls, investigate and bring cases to court.

The PCSOs have a range of powers which include:

  • issuing fixed penalty notices for a range of offences from littering to disorder
  • confiscating alcohol if necessary
  • stopping vehicles as part of a road check
  • detaining a person for up to 30 minutes while they wait for police attendance.
