Area Based Insulation

Winchester City Council has agreed to participate in Hampshire Senate's initiative of an area-based insulation scheme to help reduce the cost of energy bills for Hampshire households.

Thousands of homes across the county do not have cavity wall or basic loft insulation measures installed and it is estimated that Hampshire households could be spending an extra £49million a year in energy bills as a result. By having these measures installed, a typical Hampshire household could knock £300 off of its annual bill.

The project aims to deliver a number of benefits including addressing fuel poverty, protecting vulnerable older people and children from the cold, reducing the county's carbon footprint - saving around 20,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, and boosting the local economy both in terms of creating local jobs and reducing household fuel bills.

The scheme aims to launch later this year and follows discussions with a number of the major energy companies who are all keen to work on a major scheme in Hampshire. By using its collective purchasing power, the Senate is looking to secure economies of scale from the big energy firms given the size and scale of a countywide scheme, to benefit the people of Hampshire.
