About this deal

Having read a lot over the years about The Moors Murderers, I wasn’t expecting to find out anything new, I was wrong. Everyone that truly knows me knows that I am always with one AirPod on listening to one of my true crime podcasts or a true-crime audiobook. This book has its limits, and this isn't entirely its own fault - published in 1967, just a year after Brady and Hindley were convicted, much about the murders wouldn't be revealed until later - most notably that the pair were also responsible for the murders of Pauline Reade and Keith Bennett in addition to the three victims mentioned in the book. Also, I must note that choosing to publish another book about this case and market it as "Part 2" is extremely distasteful and seems more like a money-grab than anything, which is disgusting considering the brutality of the subject matter and the very real consequences the actions of these two individuals had on so many people.

The couple would bury some of the victims on the Moors and then often go back to the grave site to visit and try to relive the killings. Serial killers have always been a mystery to me, so learning about their childhoods and upbringings gives a new level of insight into how their minds work. In this sense, Beyond Belief can be considered a "nonfiction novel" in the manner of Meyer Levin's 1956 book Compulsion (about the Leopold and Loeb case) and Truman Capote's 1966 masterpiece In Cold Blood (about the Clutter murders). It's not until the end of the book, when the details of what the pair actually did (the photographs, the burials, the abuse) is described in plain detail that the real power of the way William´s has chosen to tell their story hits home. This definitely revealed more information than I had known before and the photos included make this more real than ever.

It is of course classed as a non fiction novel, hence my statement about the inaccuracies in the book and for that I still give this book a well deserved 4/5. May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text. I can usually stomach a lot of stupid shit, honestly, and I realize that with true crime, it’s really hard to omit details when it comes to some of these cases, because they are relevant to the whole…picture you’re trying to paint while recounting the cases. Burton's professional stage debut had been in Williams' play "Druid's Rest," and Emyln Williams' son 'Brook Williams' became one of his life-long friends.

Many people have heard of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, often referred to as the evilest couple in English history. Williams really delved into the psyche, particularly of Hindley, the devout catholic who met a scottish clerk and gave up her soul willingly. Brady and Hindley were truly evil and disturbed people and this book does a good job of detailing their lives and backgrounds while acknowledging that there is no "explanation" or "reasoning" behind their behavior. This led to him being an almost daily victim of assaults by both locals and members of the victims' families. The images inside, although at times hard to look at, really helped to create an overall picture of the life of these two evil humans, and their crimes.

I hesitate to say I really enjoyed this book because any book about the Moors Murders is extremely difficult reading. The dynamics of their relationship with each other and Myra's response after arrest I found very interesting. Correspondence that has been seen by The Times — after being opened and placed in the National Archives at Kew —also reveals that the pair took a piece of stone from a witch memorial in Perthshire as a macabre souvenir. If nothing, I hoped it would just be a recounting of the events, and as someone who doesn’t remember much of anything most of the time, I thought I’d be having an engaging time, either way.It does not need to - the bare facts that they abducted these children, took them away, in some cases photographed and recorded them, and then killed and buried them are quite horrifying enough.
