About this deal

The stories are actually really interesting and fun and had me gripped (except one that I had trouble understanding, but I was listening whilst doing things and I really should have looked up a word that kept cropping up!

Natural dialogues in each story, so that you can learn conversational Spanish and improve your speaking ability! This is a collection of quite interesting stories that ring true and introduce a good deal of vocabulary. My only issue, as another reviewer pointed out is that the book does contain some words that are used in South American Spanish speaking countries rather than what is used in Spain. From science fiction to fantasy, to crime and thrillers, Short Stories in Spanish for Intermediate Learners uses reading as the perfect tool to not only delight in learning Spanish, but to accelerate your journey towards fluency. The La criatura story made me laugh but I did think her family were mean to have pulled that kind of prank on her! Crucially, I have a real sense of accomplishment at having read 260+ pages of Spanish, albeit at a grade-school level. He now produces language books and courses across a variety of mediums with the goal of helping other people to successfully learn a new language. Stories which are broken down into manageable chapters, so you always make progress with the story and feel a sense of achievement without great difficulty reading! And the words I do know come to me much more quickly - I no longer have a lag like I often did when I started this.

Instead, you can just concentrate on what you came for in the first place - enjoying reading and having fun!

Carefully written Spanish, using straightforward grammar that is comprehensible for beginner and intermediate level learners, so that you can enjoy reading and learn new grammatical structures without the feeling of overwhelm and frustration that you get from other books. I also recommend watching Richards’s YouTube videos on storylearning, so that you can make the most of his books. If you're genuinely starting out in Spanish (which you probably are considering the book I’m reviewing), I suppose everything I just mentioned is irrelevant to you. Also at the end of each chapter there is a summary to see if you understood the overall idea of the chapter (the main idea of this chapter of the story 💡). Fifteen years later, Olly has studied ten languages and has decided to reveal how he accomplished his goal of learning foreign languages quickly.

I think I would have enjoy this so much more if the author had instead of writing his own stories had instead opted to use already famous / good short stories and then adding this "learning" layer on top. Eight stories in a variety of exciting genres, from science fiction and crime to history and thriller - making reading fun, while you learn a wide range of new vocabulary· Controlled language at your level, including the 1000 most frequent words, to help you progress confidently· Authentic spoken dialogues, to help you learn conversational expressions and improve your speaking ability· Pleasure!

I can tell from the story that's what is happening, but neither the vocab list nor the glossary translate the words. But once you have some basic words under your belt you may be able to start reading this book, which says it's A2-B1 on the CERF scale. This part was kind of annoying because many of the boldface words were very simple and didn't need an english description, while several other words were not boldface but should have been (at least in my opinion), which meant that I had to keep my spanish-english dictionary nearby. Olly's Short Stories in Spanish are good as far as learning material for beginner Spanish learners is concerned but it offers very little in terms of storytelling and narration.

Olly’s top-notch language-learning insights are right in line with the best of what we know from neuroscience and cognitive psychology about how to learn effectively. Short Stories in Spanish for Beginners has been written especially for students from beginner to intermediate level, designed to give a sense of achievement, a feeling of progress and, most importantly, enjoyment! So, I won't rate it since I'm not the intended audience and I can't provide an objective opinion on whether it suits beginners or not, although it feels like it does. Cada historia es un poco más difícil que la anterior y, por supuesto, unas son mejores que las otras.Short stories from a variety of compelling genres, from science fiction and crime to history and thriller, so you’ll have great fun reading, whilst learning a wide range of new vocabulary and rapidly improving your Spanish comprehension!
