About this deal

To celebrate Old Possum’s 75th anniversary we have commissioned lively new illustrations from Rebecca Ashdown for T. It would be more interesting in a picture book if there were more interaction between text and illustration, even for classics like this. This collection is a curious and artful homage to felines young and old, merry and fierce, small and unmistakably round. Eliot wrote the poems in the 1930s and included them, under his assumed name "Old Possum", in letters to his godchildren. I would have liked it if individual lines had had their own illustrations and it would have been good for the text to wrap itself around the pictures.

The penultimate poem, “The Ad-dressing of Cats,” comes full circle by again explaining how important names are to cats. S. Eliot published Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats through the publishing house Faber and Faber, where he served as an editor. I mean, Vanity Fair actually ran an article entitled: ‘The Cats Catastrophe: Is Tom Hooper Going to Director’s Jail? The illustrations are really nice too, i was worried there wouldn’t be enough illustrations in the book, or that the pictures wouldn’t be that great, but they were beautiful and compliment the book nicely. First, I have been reading poetry the past few weeks and was browsing the library for a short, unusual work.Rebecca works from her studio in the countryside near Stroud (UK), where she lives with her husband and two children. S. Eliot's classic and delightful collection of poetry about cats, with whimsical illustrations by Edward Gorey. With the possible exception of (Aspara)gus, these names appear to be particular rather than given names of the creatures. A number of the names and rhymes were culturally familiar for me even though I’d not read it before. Time "An absolutely marvelous rendition of Eliot's poetic classic, written for his godchildren and friends in the 1930s, which inspired the Broadway musical Cats .

Throughout the 1930s he composed the now famous poems about Macavity, Old Deuteronomy, Mr Mistoffelees and many other cats, under the name of ‘Old Possum’. For instance it would have been good if Scheffler had drawn Growltiger attacking each of the animals and creatures in his path.Registered office: WSM Services Limited, Connect House, 133-137 Alexandra Road, Wimbledon, LONDON SW19 7JY. I know I have read this more times than I have dates for, so this mayn't be surprising, but I wanted there to be more variety.
