About this deal

From Two M’s to One – The Story of Em(m)anuelle (36 minutes) is a retrospective documentary on the complete series hosted by critic David Flint. He examines the history and popularity of the character and offers biographical information on the actresses who starred in the films. D’Amato gets a fair amount of coverage as does the worldwide longevity of the franchise. Emanuelle in America is something of a mashup picture pulling from all aspects of D’Amato’s tastes as a filmmaker. It begins as another harmless erotica tale filled with beautiful women, lots of nudity and steamy situations. At roughly the 20-minute mark, D’Amato throws audiences a massive curve with the arrival of a scene featuring bestiality! I guess he shows some restraint in the content, but whatever mood he was building is instantly shattered. From there we return to heavy-petting and simulated activities – until D’Amato strikes again, this time inserting hardcore footage into several sex scenes. Not done with viewers yet, the director introduces a third act surprise featuring a fake, but well-made, snuff movie. Emanuelle watches it and encourages her mark to take her to see a live event being filmed. I don’t know anyone who would find this material arousing, but here it is. Planning to investigate billionaire Van Darren, Emanuelle visits a boxing gymnasium, where Joe, a former fighter turned trainer after being replaced as Van Darren's bodyguard, provides her with false papers. Van Darren's harem consists of twelve zodiacal women, the only current opening being for a Virgo.

rewatch --- Erotica, snuff-footage, gender debates, high-society, bestiality, gondola-rides, hardcore porn, political satire, free love, art, prostitution, gunrunning, and acid-trips collide in Joe D'Amato's exploitation masterpiece Emanuelle in America.

From there, she gets one of her investigative photojournalist gigs and winds up travelling the globe and, as Emanuelle is wont to do, gets involved in various sexual shenanigans, including a lovely girl on girl sequence with an uncredited by instantly identifiable Lorraine de Selle (best known to Eurocult and horror fans for her appearance in Cannibal Ferox). After that, she watches an orgy where a girl pops out of a cake and, shortly after that, winds up investigating a snuff film operation before then heading off to a tropical island destination intended for women of a certain pedigree. Along the way she helps out a husband and wife (her real-life husband Gabriele Tinti and Paola Senatore of Salon Kitty and Images In a Convent) and then, of course, there's a horse named Pedro to be dealt with.

The ‘In America’ of the title, too, seems redundant, since Emanuelle in America is as much about America as the disappointing Jason Takes Manhattan was about Manhattan. Although that film did have Jason Voorhees punching a kid’s head off, which is justification enough for its existence. Emanuelle in America, meanwhile, justifies its own existence with heaps of grot (although not quite as much as you might expect) and a nifty central performance from Gemser as Emanuelle. She would go on to make a number of Emanuelle movies, fighting cannibals and vicious prison wardens, but her Emanuelle in America is the most notable Emanuelle movie. There, the duke catches his wife with another man, and in turn, sleeps with Emanuelle. When his wife joins them, Emanuelle leaves, happily reuniting the couple. Emanuelle's boyfriend Bill later pays her a visit, the couple have sex during a rehearsal of the Spring concerto. At a party in the mansion, Emanuelle learns of a Caribbean island resort which offers beautiful men to sex-starved women. She also discovers the duke's hidden stash of forged paintings. When a pop out cake is opened, the party turns into an orgy, and Emanuelle takes pictures. As is the case with most of D'Amato's Emanuelle films, Laura Gemser stars asthe title character, a photojournalist with a healthy sex drive and a yen for controversial assignments that plunge her into the seamier side of international news. She's willing to use her sexuality to get behind closed doors and that trait serves her well as she travels the world, chronicling themany ways powerful people use their influence to obtain forbidden and dangerous forms of sex. Her destinations include a zodiac-themed harem owned by a rich man (Lars Bloch), the palace of a Duke (Gabriele Tinti) who likes to share partners with his wife as they stage opulent orgies and a rendezvous with a senator (Roger Browne) whose extracurricular interests include watching snuff films.
