About this deal

Previous research has shown that the more a letter is rotated away from a person, the longer it takes them to work out the answer. Sarah Gibbons, Nielsen Norman Group's Chief Designer describes the spectrum of empathy, ranging from pity to compassion, and offers advice on how to practice empathy in UX here.

See the World Through Others’ Eyes is a really interesting science set. It includes a set of glasses with interchangeable lenses which allow you to see the world in 20 different ways. These include; cat; dog; rat; horse; cow; elephant; fish; shark; cuttlefish; bird; eagle; T-rex; unicorn; astronaut; colour blindness; new born baby; near vision; fly; bee and dragonfly. The box also contains detailed instructions and explanations about how the lenses work and how various animals, including humans see. What does the world look like if you are a baby? How does a cuttlefish see it’s underwater world? Just pop on these cool glasses and you will see the world through others’ eyes!

Empathy is what is what is missing in American politics today, especially after the recent elections. Most conversations seem to unravel into a fierce finger-pointing competition without making any progress. Both sides think they are right and other is wrong. And they get frustrated that the other side is missing the point. People did this even though we did not give them instructions about the extra person introduced and they viewed them completely passively. Instead, based on some recently conducted experiments, Eyal and Epley (2010) recommend using abstract thinking to get a better view of the way others see you. If you’re worried you’re unable to master being fully empathic towards the people you design for, there’s good news! Neuroscientists have recently discovered empathy is hard-wired into the way humans are made, and is therefore an integral part of our physiology. Humans who observe others, show brain activity which resembles someone actually engaged in the activity being observed. In other words, empathy is an innate quality we can all make use of to design for the people around us! The phenomenon could explain why adults know where to hold a book so a child can read it, they said.

We are hardwired to hold on to our beliefs, to be loyal to our tribe because loyalty used to an important survival mechanism for our ancestors. It is because of the same reason that we never respond well when we are challenged. Our automatic responses have evolved through millions of years of evolution and cannot be easily broken. Develop intuition, imagination, emotional sensitivity and creativity so you can dig deeper into people’s experiences. Make sense of what is not being said, or what is being hinted at beneath the external expressions and words. Many participants in the Dreamachine reported increased wellbeing, and the University of Sussex is developing a new research programme to explore how the technology underpinning the experience could form novel interventions for mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety.
