About this deal

I’ve found that frosts which occur in late spring are the most damaging as the buds will be growing and fleshy. If you experience a mild winter followed by severe spring frosts, there’s a good chance your hydrangeas will experience some frost damage. Hydrangeas are often given as gifts in small pots but unless re-potted these will rarely last more than a few weeks. Ideally, you need to re-pot hydrangea into a container several inches larger than the one it came in to give its roots access to plenty of moisture and nutrients. Ensure the pot has plenty of drainage holes so that your plant doesn’t sit in water. Leave a few inches between the potting compost and the rim of the pot. Prepare a 4-inch pot filled to half an inch from the top for each cutting. Make a hole in the compost with a dibber or pencil. Be sure to spread it around the drip line of the branches and not the base. Water well. If the fertilizer you choose is a slow-release type, remember to lightly cover it with soil to activate the fertilizer. Include a light bi-annual dose of liquid iron to keep the leaves a healthy green. How to use: apply the granules at planting and again 2-3 times per year to maintain the right soil pH levels. Since this product is an organic fertilizer, it is safe for use around pets and children.

The most common, Hydrangea macrophylla, is a Japanese native used to a summer soaking in their rainy season, so it's not for dry gardens. Several varieties derived from H. paniculata grow to be small trees, while a few others stemming from species like H. quercifolia make great bushes and hedges. H. paniculata The one common thing about all hydrangeas is a need for a sheltered position out of the wind. Leaves scorch horribly in windy gardens and plants fail to do well. They also prefer some shade - even the drought-tolerant American species. The climbers are very good in shade. Hydrangeas do well under trees - particularly H. paniculata. This variety is of Asian origin and prefers moist conditions and acidic soil. They may fail to flower if planted in limey or chalky soils. Smooth-Leaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea Aborescens)By comparison, a very large shrub can handle up to two or three cups as long as you spread it around the drip line of the branches and don’t put it directly under the trunk. Tips: Frost can affect any hydrangea plant, but those that flower on new wood are less susceptible as any frost-damaged stems can be pruned off, and the hydrangea will still flower on new growth. A hydrangea plant that has gone a few years without any pruning will probably look unkempt and overgrown.

How to use: Use in spring and fall by applying 1 or 2 pounds depending upon the size of the shrub. Rake well into soil and water in. How to use: For best results, use the hydrangea fertilizer once a week or every two weeks. You can either use a watering can or a sprayer. For outdoor hydrangeas: mix 1 tablespoon of the fertilizer with one gallon of water. For indoor plants: mix half a teaspoon (yes teaspoon!) per one gallon of water. If you have a dry garden, opt for a North American species instead such as the summer-flowering, green-budded white Hydrangea arborescens‘Annabelle’. You can change the colour of the flowers on lace cap and mophead hydrangeas and Hydrangea serrata from pink to blue by feeding with a fertiliser low in phosphorous and high in potassium. The key reason for this is that some types of hydrangea flower on stems producedthe previous seasons whereas some hydrangeas flower on stems produced in thecurrent season.Known for their lush foliage and supersized flower head, their shrub-like appearance and long bloom period, hydrangeas are a common garden staple. Therefore, how to feed hydrangeas is a common concern. Hydrangea Fertilizer for Proper Hydrangea Care and Feeding In winter it is sometimes appropriate to leave the spent blossoms on the plant. This is because the new buds for next years growth are just below the old blossoms so leaving them on can provide protection for these tender buds over winter. Container Grown Hydrangea Select vigorous shoots from the current year’s growth and cut off with a sharp knife. Remove the soft tip growth and cut each stem into sections of 15-30 cm (6 -12 inches) with the top cut being at an angle and just above a bud.

Feed each hydrangea with a handfulor two of fish, blood and bone in mid spring. Do not feedwith a high nitrogen feed. On light sandy soils feed again with a handfulfish, blood and bone in mid-summer. The truth is that hydrangeas can cope with plenty of direct, midday sunlight, provided the soil isn’t allowed to dry out fully. I know because I’ve grown them in full sun before, and they thrived. The ideal location for these plants will bring them sun in the morning and shade or filtered sunlight in the afternoon. If organic fertilizer is made of manure then it may smell or the local wildlife may take an interest in it. Chemical FertilizersDig a large hole and add plenty of organic material such as garden compost, or add John Innes no 3 because this compost contains loam. Both will help to retain moisture in the ground. Hydrangea quercifolia has leaves shaped like oak leaves. They also have brilliant autumn foliage. The flowers are white, though some age to a pinkish hue. The blooms are cone-shaped and can be single or double. This is an American variety and can withstand drought better than the Asian types. Hydrangeas are those pretty chameleons of the plant kingdom that red-shift or blue-shift their flowers’ hues depending on the soil pH. Powders and granules are the most popular form of fertilizer for use on hydrangea and shrubs in general. They provide a middle-of-the-road option, slow-release fertilizer.
