Before transplanting, water the plant thoroughly – it’s very difficult for a dry root ball to absorb moisture once it’s in the ground. Azaleas bring us sparkling colour in spring, then for the rest of the year their contribution to our displays is limited to foliage. But since the 1980s a Louisiana plant breeder has been developing varieties that also bloom in summer and autumn. Azaleas require about one inch of water per week, so if your rainfall levels are on the low end of the scale, plants will need supplemental irrigation. There are two distinct types of Azaleas. Evergreen Azaleas, (sometimes called Japanese azaleas) keep their leaves in winter, and typically grow to 40-80cm (18"-30") in 10 years. Deciduous Azaleas are taller, reaching 120-150cm (4'-5') in 10 years, and lose their leaves in the autumn, often with some wonderful colours first. Both are members of the Rhododendron family.

In spring, right after flowering, collect cuttings five to six inches in length taken from stem tips. Choose stems of one-year old wood that’s semi-flexible – they should bend without snapping. Azalea 'Rosebud' – a dwarf, evergreen azalea, bearing masses of double pink flowers, over small, mid-green leaves.When the tiny seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves, transplant them into small individual pots. If your azalea is growing in the right place, you won’t need to worry much about pests and disease problems. The azalea leaf miner ( Caloptilia azaleella) is a much more serious pest, and dealing with an infestation may require removal of infected plants. Evergreen azaleas are easy to root as softwood new growth cuttings in June when the new growth has not hardened off and is still soft and bendy. These should be rooted with bottom heat and potted on the following spring. Evergreen azaleas seldom set much, if any, seed. Provide winter protection such as a mulch of pine needles or straw or a cloche to protect against frost as needed.Azaleas have shallow roots and require well-drained soil. If your garden is poorly drained, consider planting azaleas in containers or a raised bed. They thrive in low pH, or more acidic, conditions. If you have high pH, or more alkaline soil, you’ll need to amend your growing area. Aluminum sulfate, sulfur, coffee grounds, and pine needles are good for this. Peat moss used to be recommended, but due to environmental concerns it is no longer a good option. To plant an azalea, dig an area that is a little bit wider than the root ball but not deeper. When you set the roots in the hole, the top of the root ball should be a couple inches (5 cm) higher than soil level. Use a generous amount of mulch to keep moisture in the soil. Best Soil for Azaleas The only way to ensure a clone of the parent plant is to propagate vegetatively, via stem cuttings or stem layering.

If the plants are root bound with a dense mat of fibrous roots visible on the surface of the pot, use a clean, sterile knife to slash the mat in four to six spots. Cut about two inches deep and space the slashes evenly around the root ball. Carefully remove plants from their pots and examine the roots. Gently loosen and separate them, to encourage new growth. Encore Azaleas are best grown in a sunny position to ripen the wood and to encourage autumn flowering. Summer and autumn flowering should improve with age, so don't be too disappointed if flowering is initially a bit sparse."Careful watering with rainwater is essential throughout the summer;if plants are left to suffer drought conditions, growth may be stunted and flower buds may fail to develop or may only partially develop, eventually falling unopened or shrivelling on the plant. Avoid using tap-water particularly if you live in a hard-water area.This contains dissolved sodium bicarbonate which is alkaline and is toxic to the plant. Azaleas also don’t require a lot of pruning. You can trim your shrub to maintain a more compact appearance or simply to encourage bushier growth, but it isn’t strictly necessary. Full sun, especially in southernmost climates, can actually burn the leaves of an azalea. On the other hand, heavy shade can deprive them of necessary oxygen, resulting in poor blooming and weaker growth. Azalea shrubs perform best in partial shade or sunlight filtered by trees. They will also do well in a spot that receives morning sun followed by afternoon shade. When to Plant AzaleasAzaleas are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, used to refer to generally smaller-growing evergreen and deciduous varieties with smaller leaves. Azaleas are acid-loving plants producing long-lasting spring flowers which clothe the entire bush, available in a wide variety of colours. They are easy to grow and shade tolerant, making them perfect for growing under the canopies of trees or adding instant impact and colour to drab parts of the garden. Generally slow growing, Azaleas are effective when grown standalone or in mass plantings in larger areas. Trim after flowing to encourage a bushy growth habit.
